Gandhi Satabdi Bhavan
Gandhi Satabdi Bhavan
Gandhi Satabdhi Bhavan was built in the year 1971-72. Durgabai Deshmukh being a disciple of Gandhiji got an opportunity to serve as a Chairperson of a Sub-Committee formed by Andhra Pradesh Government to chalk out appropriate programmes to promote and propagate Gandhi Ideas and Ideals in the context of Birth Centenary Celebration. It was decided to have one Gandhi Bhavan in each district of Andhra Pradesh.
In Hyderabad Durgabai Deshmukh proposed to construct Gandhi Bhavan in the Academic Campus of Andhra Mahila Sabha located in Osmania University Campus. Lot of thinking in designing the building resulted in a beautiful octagonal shaped structure. The building is a poetic expression of Durgabai Deshmukh’s perception of Gandhiji’s life and works. Inside the building inspiring paintings of Gandhiji’s freedom movement episodes capture the visitor’s attention and inculcate sense of patriotic feeling.
Gandhians far and near Hyderabad visited Gandhi Bhavan and hallowed the place by their stay and interaction with others. Prominent among them were Shri.V.V.Giri, Shri.Kandhubai Desai, Shri.C.D.Deshmukh, Shri.M.S.Rajalingam, Shri.K.Vydhyanathan, Shri.C.V.Chary, Shri.Subba Rao.
The educational institutions have imbibed the spirit of Gandhiji and every Friday prayer meetings are organized involving faculty members and ensuring the association of distinguished Gandhian’s. Ram Dhun and readings from Geeta, Khuran and Bible become part of prayer meetings.
The legacy of Gandhi Bhavan is kept alive. Foundation lecture, beginning with 6th April 2011, is being organized with the amount donated by Prof.D.V.R.Vithal in memory of his father Digumarthi Rama Swamy garu.
